[MUSAI] ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’ wins 2020’s HOTY award with the largest number of votes by Korean gamers

At the end of 2019, along with GOTY, we introduced the award event called HOTY (Hangul Of The Year), the award for the best Korean localized game of the year. The 2020’s winner of this award has been announced; ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’ with the largest number of votes by Korean users.

HOTY is an event held by Konsoler, a Korean news site specialized in console games, for 4 years now. Among the games released each year, GOTY and HOTY are awarded to a title with the highest game performance and execution, and a title with the best Korean localization quality, respectively.

For candidates of the 2020 HOTY, 4 titles with Korean subtitle – ’13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim’, ‘Granblue Fantasy: Versus’, ‘Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin’, and ‘Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales’ along with 2 titles with both Korean subtitle and voice-over – ‘Buried Stars,’ and ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’ were nominated. Too bad that fewer audio dubbed titles were selected, but we were also very pleased to see the titles we processed here at Musai Studio as the 2 selected candidates.

We spent last summer and autumn processing the localization of ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War,’ the winner of HOTY, from last July. Over 60 voice actors participated in the main story alone. While doing the work, the most important point was to express the characters in the existing ‘Black Ops’ series in harmony with the newly appearing main characters of ‘Cold War,’ and to make them seem attractive. In particular, users might perceive it to be very awkward when they hear the dubbed voices in Korean, since they are familiar to the characters with English-speaking voices. That’s why all the process ranging from casting to directing were carefully carried out focusing on this point in order to maintain and adapt the characters’ original characteristics.

Moreover, there are many scenes featuring face-to-face conversation with selectable options among the operation team members in the campaign mode of ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’. As a result, it was often necessary to keep the sound in sync with mouth movement and even the waveforms. The script has to be modified constantly to match the original record during the session and the process of post-production was much trickier than other projects accordingly.

Watching various GOTY events held by different media publications and HOTY award every year evokes the memoirs of projects that we mended here at Musai. Doing our best for each project, we wished to get closer to the users, and when those wishes come back with such great results, it bears the greatest gifts to us. In 2021, we will continue to deliver the best Korean localization service!
